BURNING HOUSE

This project explores how a personal object can evolve into a designed product. Through research, sketching, material testing and visual communication, I transformed a meaningful item into a functional and stylised home piece. This page shows the full process, from concept to creation and presentation.

WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE?

The project began with a simple but personal question:

“What would you save if your room caught on fire?”

I created a flat lay of the objects that hold the most value to me, a combination of practical essentials and items with emotional or creative meaning.

RESEARCH

From my flat lay, I chose my Vogue magazines.

They play a huge role in my creative inspiration, especially in editorial design.

I researched Vogue’s visual identity:

typography

layout styles

photography direction

brand elements

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

To explore possibilities, I sketched eight different Vogue-related object ideas. From there, I selected three concepts to refine with more detail and function in mind.

Key points during this process:

 Incorporate Vogue's visual language

 Consider feasibility

 Combine form and function

CREATION OF THE OBJECT

My final concept became a Vogue reading lamp, a 'functional' object designed for reading magazines.

Materials & techniques:

 structure shaped with iron wire

 wrapped in clay for form

 secured with a glue gun

 finished with quick-drying paint

miniature Vogue book added as visual detail

VISUAL COMMUNICATION

To present the product as a real item, I created advertisements using Illustrator and Photoshop. I focused on clean composition, brand consistency and a high-fashion aesthetic that fits the Vogue theme

MOCK-UPS

To bring the ads into a real-world environment, I placed them in mock-ups such as:

a city poster display

a magazine advertisement

These mock-ups show how the product and visuals work in a professional context.

EXPO PRESENTATION

The final step of this project was presenting my work at a small exhibition.

I was assigned a stand that I could style and arrange freely, allowing me to showcase the lamp as a real product. I designed the setup to highlight both the crafted object and the visual communication around it.

REFLECTION

This project pushed me to move from personal inspiration to a fully executed design. I learned how important the sketching phase is for generating strong ideas, and how material choices influence the final result. Creating the advertisements also strengthened my understanding of visual communication. Overall, this project improved my skills in concept development, craftsmanship and presenting a product professionally.
